How to Choose the Right HP Pump

Horsepower (HP) must match your actual water requirement — not guesswork. The right HP delivers optimal flow, saves electricity and extends pump life. Too little HP gives weak flow; too much HP wastes power and stresses the borewell.

01

What HP actually means

HP indicates motor power available to lift water against total head (height + friction). Higher HP lifts more water or pushes to greater height — but only if borewell yield supports it.

Kingwell offers pumps from 0.5 HP for small domestic use up to high HP for deep farm and industrial borewells.

02

HP by borewell depth (general guide)

Approximate starting points — always confirm with dealer:

  • Up to 150 ft: 1 HP (domestic / small farm)
  • 150–300 ft: 1.5 to 3 HP
  • 300–500 ft: 3 to 5 HP
  • 500–800 ft: 5 HP and above (V6/V8 series)

Add head for vertical pipe run to overhead tank or field. Deeper borewells and higher delivery need more HP.

03

HP by application

  • Domestic home / apartment: 0.5 to 2 HP single phase
  • Small farm / garden: 1 to 3 HP
  • Medium farm irrigation: 3 to 7.5 HP
  • Large farm / sprinkler / drip: 5 HP to 25 HP three phase
  • Commercial building: based on tank size and peak demand

Irrigation type (flood, drip, sprinkler) determines required LPM — share this with your dealer.

04

Common HP selection mistakes

  • Buying higher HP "just to be safe" — increases electricity bill and can dry-run the borewell
  • Ignoring pipe size — small pipe restricts flow regardless of HP
  • Matching HP to depth only — forgetting delivery height and irrigation area
  • Using single phase pump above recommended HP limit for your line

Correct sizing balances depth, discharge, pipe and power supply together.
